Plasmion is all about the real time analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or simply smell in the air – be it to simplify laboratory analysis or to enable industrial applications.

About the company Plasmion

In 2016, the two brothers Jan and Thomas Wolf founded the Plasmion GmbH with headquarter in Augsburg, Germany. Previously, Jan had developed a novel ionization technology for mass spectrometry as part of his research, which enables to transform each off the shelf mass spectrometer into an “electronic nose” or rather VOC sensor. The sensor makes it possible to analyze VOCs or simply smell in ambient air. It thus drastically simplifies and improves classical chemical analysis in the laboratory environment and revolutionizes the laboratory market.

The developed technology is able to provide the performance spectrum of an analytical laboratory in an automated measuring system for industry. For the first time a wide range of different applications is now also possible outside of a laboratory, such as breath analysis for the identification of pathogens causing illness, the measurement and control of exhaust gases in real time or automated decision making in any kind of industrial production line. As illustrated, this means that, for example, spoiled or contaminated food can be detected directly on the conveyor belt; explosives or drugs in the ambient air can be detected in seconds at airports, concert venues or sport stadiums; finally, the diagnosis of diseases in real time is one of the most important applications, since treatment can be started immediately and no more time is wasted waiting for a test result.

Together with their team, Jan and Thomas are tirelessly pursuing the goal of putting the new technology and its opportunities into practice. Plasmion has already been awarded several prestigious prizes, such as the Achema Founder’s Prize and the Innovation Award of the Handelsblatt and the Goethe University Frankfurt.

PRODUCTS LINE

  1. 1
    Ionization Source

Cold plasma ionization based on dielectric barrier discharge enables fragment free measurement of multiple analytes. It can be run with any carrier gas (even room air). Moreover, it enables a gas tight measurement of sensitive processes or fully quantitative connection to classical GC/LC methods.

  2. 2
    Control Unit

Central control unit for all SICRIT connection modules (GC-SPME/LC/IR-desorption). Best choice for laboratory based applications like direct screening / quantification and for combinations with most lab-based separation/enrichment techniques (GC/HPLC/SPME/LA).

  3. 3
    Modules

The SICRIT® GC/SPME Module combines ionization technology with state-of-the-art separation and/or enrichment techniques. It enables direct SPME-SICRIT®-MS measurements with automated injections featuring a PAL automation system as well as fully quantitative direct measurements (manual or automated) of liquids and headspace samples. Moreover, it enables a direct SICRIT®-MS connection from a GC or microbalance via a heated transfer line.

  4. 4
    Interfaces

We offer interfaces for all common Thermo Fisher LC-MS-Systems like:

    • LTQ
    • LTQ Velos
    • LTQ Orbitrap
    • Orbitrap Elite
    • Exactive Series
